While similar to the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417), the 462 visa has some other additional requirements, that includes post-secondary education, English proficiency, and, for some nationals, a government support letter, showing stricter eligibility conditions compared to the 417 visa.

Stages Under Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)

Subclass 462 Visa can be granted up to three times, each permitting 12 months in Australia, with extensions based on completing particular work in designated regions. Every stage has its own eligibility requirements under DHA rules.

1. First Work and Holiday Visa

First Visa allow applicants to live, work, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months. Also, visa holders can work in various occupations to support their stay and may study for a short period while meeting visa rules & conditions.

Visa is valid for a 12-month stay in Australia.
Holders can work temporarily to support travel.
Holders can study up to 4 months during the visa.
Must meet DHA eligibility requirements.

2. Second Work and Holiday Visa

Second Visa permits holders to extend their stay in Australia for an additional 12 months, provided they successfully complete the required period of DHA-approved specified regional work during their first visa.

If in Australia, hold a substantive visa or one recently expired.
Work must be paid and in approved industries or regions.
You must have completed 3 months of specified work.
All original visa conditions continue to apply.

3. Third Work and Holiday Visa

Third visa allows applicants aged 18–30, who have held a second Work and Holiday visa, to stay in Australia for a third working holiday, completing DHA-approved specified regional work during their previous visa.

Eligible after completing at least 6 months of specified regional work.
Work must be within DHA-approved industries or locations.
Allows a further 12-month stay in Australia.
Must continue to meet age, health, and character requirements.

Who Can Apply for Work and Holiday Visa: Eligibility Check

Applicants must meet the following DHA requirements to apply for any Subclass 462 visa:

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Age Requirement: Be aged 18 to 30 years (inclusive) at the time of application.

  • Passport Requirement: Hold a valid passport from an eligible partner country.

  • Financial Requirement: Have sufficient funds to support initial stay in Australia and return travel.

  • Health & Character: Meet health and character requirements as specified by DHA.

  • Dependents: Not be accompanied by dependent children during the visa period.

First Work and Holiday Visa Eligibility

  • Specified Work: Must have completed at least 3 months of specified work in regional Australia during the first visa. (If applying for second)
  • Work Type: Work must be paid employment in approved industries and locations.
  • Application Location: Must apply from outside Australia when submitting the first visa.
  • No Previous Entries: Not have previously entered Australia on a subclass 462 or 417 visa.

Second Work and Holiday Visa Eligibility

  • Previous Visa: Must have previously held a Subclass 462 visa and completed the first visa.
  • Location Requirement: If in Australia, hold a substantive visa or your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago.
  • Passport & Age: Hold a passport from an eligible country and be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive).
  • Specified Work: Must have completed at least 3 months of DHA-approved specified work.

Third Work and Holiday Visa Eligibility

  • Previous Visas: Must have previously held two Subclass 462 visas in Australia.
  • Location Requirement: If in Australia, hold a substantive visa or your last substantive visa expired less than 28 days ago.
  • Specified Work: Must have completed at least 6 months of DHA-approved specified work during the second visa.
  • Work Type: Work must be paid and meet DHA-defined criteria for industry and location.
